canvas bushcraft rucksack

Norwegian Patrol Pack

This has to be the most awesome and beautiful small rucksack ever made! Norwegian patrol tactical pack, which means just enough stuff to carry into action, rather than a full load-carrying rucksack or “Bergen” (after the original Norwegian army packs designed by Ole F. Bergan of Norway since 1908). A beautifully simple design in tough green canvas with thick grey leather straps and trim, copper rivets and a flexible internal ‘frame’ made up of 3 lightweight panels in the back section.

SOLD OUT  – unfortunately these have become extremely rare in recent years and are now almost impossible to find – this page & images remain on the site for interest only.

UPDATE 2017:  We have been working for some time on a new canvas & leather rucksack based on this vintage classic. We are excited to be able to announce that the new canvas & leather day pack is now available to: for further details and photos please see our new blog post introducing the new WYNNCHESTER PATROL PACK

Product Description

Made with the same rich green thick canvas and beautiful grey Norwegian elk-hide leather straps as our larger Norwegian Army Telemark pack, the innovative panel system means the patrol pack can be folded in 3 and carried inside or attached to the main pack.  The basic design was largely copied in the legendary Berghaus “Munro” backpack made in cordura (nylon) from the ’80’s to the present day and which became a British forces favourite rather than the issue kit.

So we have brought this into our “Recon” reconditioned army rucksack range as a priority – we source supplies in various conditions of this classic canvas rucksack, remove any that are beyond repair and then clean, treat the leather with special natural leather oils, then we apply a wax finish by hand to the canvas. This is then heated carefully so that the wax penetrates deep into the canvas weave then dried slowly over several days to give the classic waxed-cotton look and waterproofing quality.

The colour is just beautiful once the wax has been applied, a real deep forest green colour, and this rucksack is truly brought back to life and will become one of your favourite most trusted pieces of gear, absolutely bombproof and robust, simple and practical to use and live with. These rucksacks will never be made again, and we are very happy to be bringing these back to life – perfect for day hikes, bushcraft forays, day to day use or as a small expedition pack.

As mentioned earlier, in all the years I lived in Norway I never actually saw one of these Patrol Packs, though the Telemark pack was/is everywhere. I am now completely smitten and I managed to pack it with everything needed for an overnighter in the Fiskars forest: sleeping bag (micro fleece), inflatable sleeping pad and pillow, tarp with pegs and cordage, bivvy bag, Firebox Nano, cook pot etc, iPad mini, note book and pen, camera, headlamp, pack towel, toothbrush and water bottle (80 cl). More versatile than I first judged it and, certainly, the prettiest thing that ever was! And I’m really loving the Adventure bedroll too: best tent I ever had, and I’ve had a few!
